In the early days of computer era, when monitors could only display plain text rather than images, users would create pictures by carefully placing text characters. It’s called ASCII art, most examples of this art required a fixed width font.
I’ve got this spam gem today (RX medication ad):
And it’s not just random ASCII characters, they’re using complete words.

2Now that’s some grade A effort. I don’t know why you opened the email, I would be terrified it would be virus central inside. If I got an email like that I would probably buy their product, just because they put so much work into their spam.
